McAfee, claiming "This is to inform you about your McAfee Security Subscription that has expired and
has automatically renewed"
Did you receive an email from McAfee, claiming This is to inform you about your McAfee Security Subscription that has expired and is on automatic renewal/upgrade? Did they then instruct you to contact them at (844) 483-1499 or something similar?
How does it work? One example
Often, the email looks legitimate and says your McAfee subscripition has expired and it is being renewed for $395.99 (or some other price. Don't go all OCD on us now)
- If you call the phone number (DON'T) they typically say it needs to be done online, and send you to a site that says to click on link to get a refund.
- If you fill out the form, which usually asks for confidential infoirmation like they will feed you story like, "you forgot to put in the decimal and that they just put $40,000 into your checking account". They will then claim they cannot take it back out and try to get you to wire the difference ($36,600) to them.
- If you go to your bank and they may tell you that $40,000 was transferred from another of your accounts, like a home equity account into your checking account. The bank can reverse it, but will need to close your checking and savings accounts, since they are compromised because you gave the scammers your account information and create new ones.
Sol, don't fall for it. It is NOT from McAfee. It is a scam, and if you call them back or follow their instructions you will lose money and possibly your identity! The people behind this are the worst kind of human scum; willing to do anything to scare, threaten, lie, cheat and steal money from anyone, including the elderly and poor. They usually operate out of Nigeria, China, Russia and even some developed western countries. Attachments typically include malware to infect your computer, tablet or phone and allow the scammer to capture your passwords.
