Extortion Email Scams
Extortion Emails: Demands
for Money and Death Threats
Scam emails have hit a new low with threats of extortion, Some
claim the will humiliate the victim, others claim to go public with embarrassing
information, and some even use death threats.
At present, these emails mainly come in two
varieties: a claim that the scammer has hacked your computer and
demands payment or he will send incriminating evidence that the victim
has viewed online porn, or worse, to everyone in the victims
contact list; or a death threat if a payment is not received.
Overwhelmingly, these are purely scams. Of course,
occasionally, a scammer will send a email to someone who has done
the things the scammer claims, and this appears to make his claims
of hacking the victims apear credible.
Take a look at examples of these two types of scams
to get a better understanding:
Scammer claims to have hacked your computer
and recorded you watching porn
Usually, the scammer claims to have hacked your
computer, collected all your passwords, contact lists, observed you
watching porn, turned on the camera on your computer and recorded
you engaging in sex or other embarrassing or inappropriate
activities. Then comes the demands for money.

Scammer issues a death threat
The email claims to come from a hot man who is
threatening to assassinate the recipient unless the individual pays
several thousand dollars to the sender of the email. The FBI first
noted this in their IC3 alert posted on December 7, 2006 regarding e-mails claiming that the sender has
been paid to kill the recipient and will cancel the contract on the recipient's
life if that person pays a large sum of money. Some emails claim to be from the
FBI in London. Others claim to be direct from the "hit man".
