Liberty National

Unsolicited Job Emails - Example: Liberty National Recruiting

Do you receive job offers or requests for job interviews (out of the blue) from Liberty National Recruiting or other companies you don't know? It's no surprise if you do. There appear to be two different scams or at least, misrepresentations, going:

  1. The scum that push all kinds of internet frauds, such as identity theft and pyramid schemes (aks, "multi-level marketing") have caught the spam craze and are now soliciting new victims by harvesting email addresses (usually from jobs websites, like Monster.com, Dice.com, HotJobs, CareerBuilder, etc.).  See this page for examples of this type of email.

  2. Now a company that calls itself "Liberty National Recruiting" is bombarding people who place their resumes on the jobs websites with emails claiming to offer jobs. The email is very vague and ambiguous. The company has been evasive and unresponsive to requests to stop sending the emails, and sending the emails to people who post resumes on job boards, particularly Monster.com, apparently with little regard to the person's resume or stated career goals. They can avoid meeting a legal definition of Spam because, by posting your resume, you have agreed to be contacted!  But this is SLEAZY even if it isn't illegal. See below:

Liberty National Recruiting

Here's what we have discovered:

Although they hide their true identity behind the name "Liberty National Recruiting", making them sound like a traditional recruiting company, we've discovered they're part of Liberty National Life Insurance Company, which is owned by Torchmark Corporation. See this page for much more information about those companies.

How to stop the spam emails from Liberty

They didn't respond to our phone or email requests to stop spamming. The "unsubscribe" link did nothing for us. We recommend you file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, it is free and easy to do online.  Just fill out the simple form on this page: https://odr.bbb.org/odrweb/public/GetStarted.aspx If you get a security announcement, just click OK and then "next" and fill out the form with the information from Liberty's email!

If you have any experience with Liberty National Recruiting, please email us to tell us about it! If you have a version of their email that we haven't listed below, forward it to us and we'll add it to the watch list.

See farther down this page for examples of the emails and for our attempts to reach them.

Well, as luck would have it, i got a legit job offer somewhere else. so... I send them an email which was:

Something came up and i'm unable to attend.

Regards

AXXXXXX

I got ANOTHER reply:

AXXXX,

I have already told J.P. that you would be there.  Please reconsider.  This opportunity only comes once in a lifetime.  I have been with Liberty National for almost five years.  The income is UNBELIEVABLE!!!!!!!  I hope you will be there.

Thanks,

J.P.

THEN, the alarm bells starting ringing, i googled their name and this was the first website i came across...

so i send them this:

Erm... don't know a better way to put this but. https://www.consumerfraudreporting.org/spamjob_Liberty.php Good day.

Haven't heard from them since.... i just wanted to say i wouldn't know what i would have done without your website, thank you again, i bet you've saved more people than you know.

Keep up the good work.

Here is what one victim reported to us on August 13, 2007 that describes what happens at an "interview":

"I was sent an email from Liberty National inviting me to join their company. I was looking for work at the time and was in a somewhat desperate frame of mind about it. I had a bad feeling and was rather suspicious the entire time but I did follow through out of curiosity. I phoned the local office in Mobile, AL and was asked to attend an interview at a business suite in a nearby suburb.

Upon arrival at the "interview" I found a room full of people had answered the same request. The office suites they use, by the way, are temporary suites rented on a month to month basis. Looking deeper into the equipment and decor, I figure they can move out all the props of their scam within an hour. So, in stead of the interview i was expecting it was a room full of people.

I was then entertained by a seminar of sorts with very little information of any kind. There was actually very little of any substance disclosed. What they did want was for people to get their insurance "license" which they would help us study for and take. The books and study guides we were to purchase from them, along with the testing fees and state fees added up to several hundred dollars total. I immediately started doing the math in my head and realized the nature and potential profitability of this scam! A room full of people, each paying hundreds of dollars for this. I watched several people in the group provide credit card numbers!

Then they instructed us that they would "train" us to set up our own "recruitment" offices to put on the same charade ourselves. It is a kind of pyramid type scam. Just unbelievable! I can see where you could make a great deal of money doing this type of thing, but how could you live yourself afterwards? I have a conscience and a bit of self respect. This is nothing more than taking advantage of people in desperate situations or people without the level of skepticism necessary to see through this. Horrible.

I have decided to begin a new hobby. I am going to sign up for these interviews and when they have spent all the time going over their ordeal I will then expose the truth to the group of people in attendance. If I can just help a few people not get caught in such a trap then i will have at least done some good. "

Clicking on the link to stop the emails did not stop the emails.  We continued to receive 2 or 3 per day.  In fact, the link probably just caused them to send more! The webpage simply froze and did not validate that it had removed our address! We called them and we were passed around.

UPDATES:

January 24, 2007: we called them at 770-498-7158 at 9:16 am.

A woman answered (as "Liberty National recruiting") and we asked to speak to Chip Poppell.  She said "just a moment" and put us on hold.  The phone went silent, except for some occasional clicking sounds. No one did ever answer.  At 9:18 am, we called back and a recording answered saying "Welcome to the message center.  To enter your mailbox enter star.  Otherwise, please redial the number you are calling."  We called several more times, but never got a human again.

January 24, 2007, 10:55 am - We contacted the Better Business Bureau of Atlanta (where one of Liberty's branch offices is located)

First, we tried the BBB website, http://www.atlanta.bbb.org/ but there was no information there about Liberty.  Next, we called the BBB.  We waited on hold for about 20 minutes.  The BBB agent checked their databases but had no information.  They recommended filing a complaint, which we did.  We recommend you also file a complaint.  Just fill out the simple form on this page: https://odr.bbb.org/odrweb/public/GetStarted.aspx

January 30, 2007 - We received a reply from the Better Business Bureau.

Success, at last!  Our staff is no longer receiving emails from Liberty.  See the response from the Atlanta Better Business Bureau and Liberty's reply on this page!

The lesson learned is: DO file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau! Just fill out the simple form on this page: https://odr.bbb.org/odrweb/public/GetStarted.aspx If you get a security announcement, just click OK and then "next" and fill out the form with the information from Liberty's email!

More odd facts about Liberty

An alert visitor notified us that if you Google one of the phone numbers that a "Mr. King" at Liberty provides, Google says it belongs to a T. Pruett in Fayettville, GA; and is a private residence.  See this page in Google: https://www.google.com/search?q=770+306-0955+&hl=en&pb=r&sa=X&oi=rwp&ct=title We called that number; it just rang until an answering machine picked up and a male voice answered as "Liberty National".  It is possible that Google is wrong... or Liberty operates some or all offices out of homes?
